Fed: Labor calls for rethink on travel warnings
CANBERRA, Dec 24 AAP - Labor today called on the federal government to rethink itsopposition to requiring travel agents to pass on official travel warnings to holidaymakers.
Foreign Minister Alexander Downer has flagged moves to make travel warnings more accessible, but rejected opposition calls to issue travellers with a summary of any travel adviceon their destination.
Labor foreign affairs spokesman Kevin Rudd said it was important the government learnfrom the Bali bombings.
"A key part of the lesson is ensuring that travel advice on countries where there isa security risk is right, but also having a system which gets a core summary of that adviceout to travellers before they leave," he said.
"My challenge to Mr Downer is to rethink his short-sighted approach to this problemand instead take a long term view of the fundamental interests of the Australian public."
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade last week re-issued a warning for Australiansto defer all non-essential travel to all parts of Indonesia, including Bali.
