Fed: Qantas drug dispute to head to AIRC

A dispute over Qantas's proposed random drug and alcohol testing program will headto Australia's industrial umpire tomorrow after mass stop-work meetings today failed toresolve the row.

Ten unions and the ACTU have banded together to oppose the breath and urine testing, which Qantas says is designed to ensure the health and safety of both employees and thetravelling public.

More than 600 Qantas workers in Melbourne today voted to oppose the regime in two stop-workmeetings, following a walk-out by about 900 Qantas workers in Sydney yesterday.

The ACTU says the issue remains unresolved and unions will ask the Australian IndustrialRelations Commission to intervene.

Qantas is due to begin a trial of the program in Sydney later this month, and unionswill seek a one-month deferment of the trial to allow further mediation.

Tomorrow's AIRC hearing is scheduled for 2pm (AEST) in Melbourne, and Qantas workersin Brisbane are also planning a stop-work meeting tomorrow.
