NSW: Suspicious fire destroys primary school

SYDNEY, Aug 16 AAP - Investigations were under way after a primary school in the Illawarrawas destroyed by a suspicious fire overnight, police said today.

Police were called to the Kemblawarra Primary School at Kemblawarra, near Port Kembla,at 10.37 pm (AEST) after an intruder alarm was activated.

When they arrived, they found the main complex of the school well alight.

Fire Brigade personnel arrived a short time later but struggled with the blaze forseveral hours before it was brought under control about 2.30am (AEST) this morning.

The school building was completely destroyed.

Detectives from Lake Illawarra and the Forensic Services Group will check the scene this morning.

The fire is being treated as suspicious and anyone with information is urged to contact police.
